One thing is for sure about the Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 and that’s that it’s a great feeling unit. And, after all, isn’t that one of the most critical factors in choosing a mouse, especially if you use your pc for long hours most days? There’s ergonomic and then there’s feeling good! These days, almost all the mice are touted as being ergonomic (like, healthy for the hand!), but if it doesn’t feel good when you’re using it, who cares how good it’s supposed to feel?

Whether it’s the sculptured design or the soft, ribbed rubber grips, when you’re holding it in your hand it feels effortless, even after hours of use. This is also a nice looking unit and comes in a choice of five colors, one of which is sure to meet your expectations. What’s funny, however, is that different colors go for different prices (at least on Amazon where some deep discounts are currently being offered). The manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $39.99 is pared down to $21.99 for the black colored model, $25.00 for the ruby pink, and all the way down to $23.38 for the white. That’s a good discount, more than 40%.
There are also models in blue and green that are currently going for $23.94 and $23.89 respectively. Where this pricing system comes from seems confusing since all the mice are identical except for color. Black must be most popular among users.
If you are looking at buying the Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000, I suggest you get it from Amazon as they have the cheapest price online.
Comfort and colors aside, the nuts and bolts of the Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 make it accurate, reliable and easy to use. It incorporates a trademarked technology called Bluetrack that allows it to track on almost any surface imaginable. The 2.4 GHz wireless connection makes it ideal for use in wireless-rich environments (like airports) without dropping off or losing connectivity. The nano receiver is very small and, when plugged into your laptop can be virtually forgotten unless it needs to be transferred to another computer. There’s also a place on the mouse where the receiver can be stored if you so desire.
This mouse only requires a single double-A battery for power and, while Microsoft claims up to ten months of use between battery replacements the operative words here are up to. Reports from users show that some only get a couple of months out of a single battery and some even less than that. Some have claimed battery life to be less than one month. A warning light lets you know when power is low.
The scroll wheel has a 4-direction scrolling capability and also acts as a button to flip between windows when using Windows 7. There are four other buttons, all programmable, nicely spaced and placed on this unit.
The Good:

- Tracks almost anywhere
- Small receiver and great connectivity up to 30′ distance
The Bad:
- Numerous reports of the receiver shorting out and overheating, rendering the unit inoperable
- Battery-life expectancy seems overly optimistic
The best advice here is to go to Amazon or another widely used buying website, search Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 and read the user reviews available. This is a great mouse, especially for the price, but not if it shorts out and fries itself. It’s not an isolated incident. You be the judge.
